Sort & Explore Sensory Cube

About This Toy Reach in, pull out, push through, and explore! This colorful sensory cube combines shape sorting with flexible elastic bands that create an extra challenge as children work to retrieve and replace the included pieces. Children can reach between the bands, grasp an object, figure out how to maneuver it through the opening, explore the different shapes, or simply experiment with stretching and moving the bands. The combination of colorful objects, resistance, movement, and hands-on problem-solving makes the cube interesting for repeated sensory and exploratory play.

Why It’s a Toy Treasure This isn't just a traditional shape sorter! The elastic-band design changes the challenge from simply matching a shape to an opening to figuring out how to reach, grasp, pull, turn, and maneuver objects through a changing space. Children who enjoy putting things in and taking them out, manipulating objects, repetition, sensory exploration, or figuring out how things work may especially enjoy it. There are also plenty of ways to participate without requiring a child to sort the pieces by shape or use the toy in one prescribed way.

Play & Development Possibilities Sensory-cube play creates opportunities for grasping, reaching, fine-motor coordination, bilateral hand use, motor planning, spatial problem solving, object exploration, and cause-and-effect learning. As children experiment with getting pieces into and out of the cube, they can also explore concepts such as in, out, pull, push, stuck, get, more, help, and again through meaningful actions. A play partner can turn this naturally repetitive activity into a shared routine by responding to the child’s actions, helping when requested, taking turns, adding playful surprises, and noticing all the different ways the child communicates during the activity.

Play Possible Tip: Put a Favorite Inside!

The pieces that come with a toy don’t always have to be the most interesting part! When appropriate and safe, try placing a familiar or motivating object that is large enough to be safely used with the toy inside the cube. Let your child discover it and figure out how to get it out. Resist the urge to immediately show them how—watch, wait, and see what they try first. If they look toward you, hand you the cube, gesture, vocalize, use AAC, sign, or communicate in another way, respond to their message. A favorite object can turn a simple reaching activity into a playful problem-solving and communication opportunity.
